Betta/fighting fish care for beginners

I will provide all the necessary needs for bettas and all the goodies you can find in your local pets store for your fish.

yes, you might have heared that the bettas/ fighting fish is not a suitable fish if you are a beginner. i would say that its a big NO because if you have interest and if you love your fish no fish is advanced or less advanced. many people would say to get guppy or tetras as your first fish but those fish needs max 10 gallon tank and cannot be kept in a bowl. but fighting fish can live on a bowl without oxygen. So i would recommend bettas as a beginner fish.

  1. Setting up the tank

setting up the tank has lots of work on it. bettas doesnt like chlorine water. Bettas need many hiding spots so be sure to add his own home, plants or floating logs since bettas get bored and stressed easily. Therefore after you set up your tank and water you have to add a chlorine remover and its a must.

There’s various types of chlorine removers. there’s pills and liquids. Either you can buy these from you local pet store, supermarkets or purchase online. Add 2-3 drops for a bowl and for a several gallon tank you have to add more. leave the water for 30 min after adding the solution.even though you get rid of chlorine there can be varoius parasites and harmful bacteria on the water. there fore after 30 min of adding the chorine remover add the blue liquid( methylene blue ) to the water. and leave it for 15min.

2. Introducing betta to the tank

Do not directly put the fish inside the tank. if your store provides you a bag full of water and a betta inside it all you have to do is place the plastic bag (with the betta inside) on the tank. let it sit down for about 45 min to let the water temperature inside the bag becomes constant with the tank temperature.

2. Moving the betta to the tank

Moving the betta requires patients. do not force your self. bettas can be very worried when they come out of the water and they try to jump. Therefore you have to be very careful in this stage. there’s two methods which you can use to transfer betta. Either you can use a net or use your hand. be sure not to mix the water which the store gave you because it consists of many bacteria and waste.

4. Turn on the lamp

Turning the lamp on is a must because betta fish needs 12 hr max day light and 12-16 hr night. there for in the morning you have to turn on the light and in the light turn off the lamp and be sure to cover the betta with a box if you are having a bowl with small holes on where air can pass through. this is because when its in the morning the betta will rise even though the lamp is turned off due to the day light. therefore for a proper sleep bettas should have a cover from the light accessing. be sure to turn on the lamp when you wake-up. some people keeps the betta tank/ bowl near a window for natural lighting it would be safe unless the direct sun light does not hit the tank. If the tank is directed to the sun there will be lots of algae and the water would be cloudy and most importantly the fish might die because of burning caused by sun rays, so be sure that the sun rays does’t hit the tank.

as you can see the bowl doesn’t hit the direct sun. so this reduce the risk of betta dying

5. Do water changes

water changes weekly is a must for a bowl without a filter. Be sure to change 30% of water every week and so a full water change every month. When doing water changes remember to add chlorine remover leave the water for 30 min and methylene blue and leave the water for 15 min and then add the water to the bowl.

For several gallon tanks the water changers depends if the tank is filtered monthly water changes are needed.
